AgFunder: European agrifoodtech funding stabilises after 18-month slide — €1.1B deployed in Q1 2026

AgFunder released its Q1 2026 European AgriFoodTech Investment Report on May 13, the first quarterly read that confirms the European correction has bottomed. Total deployed capital reached €1.1 billion across 84 deals — flat year-on-year but up 18% versus Q4 2025, the first quarter-on-quarter rebound since the 2023 peak. The composition matters more than the headline. Median Series A ticket rose to €9.5M (from €7.8M in 2025), Series B median climbed to €22M (from €15M), and the share of rounds with at least one US-based lead investor jumped to 41% (versus 28% the prior year). Translation: European founders are again competing for transatlantic capital instead of being abandoned by it. Hottest verticals by deal count: biocontrol and biostimulants (17 deals, €198M), precision-ag hardware (14 deals, €241M), and ag-fintech (9 deals, €174M). Vertical farming and alt-protein remained subdued at €54M combined — a category-mix shift confirming what the past 18 months have already telegraphed: European LPs and corporates now strongly prefer field-deployable, regulatory-aligned bets. Country breakdown: Germany €312M (28%), France €248M (23%), Netherlands €164M (15%), UK €152M (14%), with Spain and the Nordics making up the bulk of the remainder. Germany's lead is now built on three sectors — robotics, biologicals, and digital-grain logistics — rather than carbon farming, which has dropped out of the top five for the first time since 2022. Practical reading for founders: the 2024–2025 ‘nuclear winter' for European agtech is over. Pre-seed and seed remain crowded but quality teams with €1M+ ARR or peer-reviewed efficacy data are again receiving multiple term-sheets. The window has reopened — but the bar for evidence is permanently higher.
