IRRI validates mechanized dry seeding for low-emission rice farming in Vietnam

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in collaboration with Vietnam's national agricultural partners, has presented field validation results for mechanized dry direct seeding (MDDS) combined with fertilizer deep placement technology. The results, showcased at a high-level workshop in early May, demonstrate a viable pathway to dramatically reduce methane emissions from paddy rice production. Rice cultivation is the single largest agricultural source of methane, a greenhouse gas with 80 times the warming potential of CO₂ over a 20-year horizon. Conventional wet-seeding methods keep fields flooded for extended periods, creating anaerobic conditions that drive methane-producing microbial activity. MDDS eliminates the early-season flooding phase entirely. The IRRI trial data from four provinces in the Mekong Delta showed methane reductions of 42-48% compared to conventional wet-seeding, with no statistically significant yield penalty. When combined with deep placement of urea supergranules - which reduces nitrogen volatilization by burying fertilizer below the root zone - total greenhouse gas intensity per kilogram of rice fell by 38%. Vietnam produces 27 million tons of rice annually, making it the world's third-largest exporter. The government has committed to reducing agricultural emissions by 30% under its Nationally Determined Contribution, and MDDS is now positioned as a centerpiece technology for meeting that target. A national scale-up program covering 1 million hectares by 2028 is under discussion. For the global AgTech sector, the IRRI results validate a growing thesis: emissions reduction in rice doesn't require genetic modification or radical system redesign - it requires mechanization and precision nutrient management at scale. Equipment manufacturers including Kubota and Yanmar are already developing MDDS-compatible seeders for Southeast Asian markets.
