Kubota deepens autonomous farming bet with strategic investment in Agtonomy

Kubota Corporation has made a strategic investment in Agtonomy, a US-based startup developing autonomous driving platforms and precision automation systems for agricultural operations. The investment deepens a partnership that began in 2024, when the two companies began co-developing smart solutions for specialty crop production. Agtonomy's platform converts conventional tractors and implements into semi-autonomous or fully autonomous machines using a retrofit kit approach. Rather than requiring farmers to purchase entirely new equipment, the system adds perception, navigation, and task-execution layers to existing machinery — a pragmatic strategy that dramatically lowers the adoption barrier. Specialty crops — including wine grapes, tree nuts, berries, and vegetables — represent a $65B market in the US alone but have been largely bypassed by the autonomy wave that has transformed broadacre row-crop farming. The economics are different: fields are smaller, terrain is uneven, and crop-specific tasks like canopy management and selective harvesting require more nuanced machine behavior. For Kubota, the deal extends its multi-year strategy to shift from pure hardware manufacturing to integrated automation solutions. The company's 2025 mid-term plan targets 30% of revenue from smart agriculture by 2030, up from an estimated 8% today. Previous investments include indoor farming company Plenty and data analytics platform FarmLogs. Agtonomy CEO Tim Bucher confirmed that the Kubota partnership will focus initially on autonomous mowing and spraying for California vineyards and orchards, with commercial availability targeted for Q1 2027. The company has raised $57M to date from investors including Hitachi Ventures and Autotech Ventures.
