North Dakota awards autonomous agriculture grants to Greenfield Robotics and Grand Farm

The North Dakota Department of Commerce has awarded Autonomous Agriculture Grants to two organizations: Greenfield Robotics receives $465K to scale its inter-row weeding robot fleet in the state's soybean corridor, while Grand Farm receives $420K to expand its autonomous testing facility near Fargo with new sensor-validation infrastructure. The grants - funded at 93% of requested amounts - are part of North Dakota's broader strategy to position itself as a national hub for autonomous agricultural systems. Governor Kelly Armstrong has framed the initiative as an economic development play: 'Every autonomous system deployed in North Dakota is both a productivity gain for our producers and a technology export to the rest of the Midwest.' Greenfield Robotics is notable for its contrarian approach: rather than building a premium-priced standalone robot, the company offers weeding-as-a-service at $8-12/acre using lightweight, low-cost platforms that operate in coordinated swarms. The North Dakota deployment will add 15 units to the existing 60-unit fleet operating across Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Grand Farm's autonomous testing facility is the less glamorous but arguably more important investment. The 3,200-acre site provides standardized testing conditions for autonomous systems from multiple vendors, including sensor calibration, safety validation, and interoperability testing. As regulatory frameworks for autonomous farm equipment evolve, having an accredited testing facility becomes a critical infrastructure asset. The state-level funding trend is accelerating: California, Iowa, and Texas have all launched similar programs in 2025-2026. For AgTech robotics startups, this creates a fragmented but growing non-dilutive funding pipeline that can offset the high capital costs of hardware field trials.
