Pivot Bio raises $215M Series F at $1.8B valuation as nitrogen-fixing microbes hit profitability

Pivot Bio closed a $215M Series F led by Generation Investment Management with participation from Temasek, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and DCVC, valuing the nitrogen-fixing microbe pioneer at $1.8B post-money. The round is the largest dedicated biologicals raise of 2026 and lands amid clear evidence that the long-troubled segment is finally clearing the unit-economics bar that killed dozens of peers in 2023–24. The headline numbers from Pivot's investor materials, reviewed by AgTech Capital: 6.1 million treated acres in 2025 (up 41% YoY), $148M revenue, positive gross margins for the first full year, and a contracted 2026 acreage book that already sits at 8.2M acres. The Series F is explicitly framed as a path-to-IPO round, with co-CEO Karsten Temme telling investors a public listing remains targeted for late 2027. Three trends made the round possible. First, EU pesticide-and-fertiliser tightening has expanded the willingness-to-pay for biological nitrogen replacements, especially in maize-on-maize rotations. Second, Cargill and ADM signed multi-year offtake commitments tied to scope-3 emissions reductions, providing demand certainty Pivot lacked in earlier rounds. Third, manufacturing yield improvements at the Pivot fermentation facility in St. Louis dropped cost-per-acre by 38% versus 2023. The deal will likely re-rate the entire biologicals comparable set. Indigo Ag, Sound Ag, and AgriMetis — all of which have struggled to raise in the past 24 months — should see fresh investor interest, particularly from European LPs newly mandated to deploy into climate-aligned ag. Conversely, the bar for new biologicals startups has risen sharply: investors now expect a clear path to <$15/acre cost-of-goods and contracted offtake before Series A. For founders the message is sharp: biologicals investing has matured past the science-risk era. What's funded now is manufacturing scale, regulatory dossier readiness, and grower-distribution lock-in. Pure discovery-platform pitches without a clear scale-up roadmap will continue to struggle.
