UK government launches £5M agri-tech innovation competition to fast-track commercialization

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced a new £5M competitive funding round specifically designed to accelerate the commercialization of agricultural technology. The competition opens June 2, 2026, and targets SMEs with technology at TRL 6-8 - past proof-of-concept but not yet at scale. The program structure is notable: it blends non-dilutive grant funding (up to £250K per company) with co-investment from a curated network of private AgTech investors. This 'blended finance' model aims to solve the well-documented 'valley of death' problem where promising AgTech startups fail between seed and Series A due to the capital intensity of hardware validation and field trials. Priority sectors include precision livestock management, soil health monitoring, post-harvest waste reduction, and autonomous systems for specialty crops. Defra has explicitly excluded pure-software plays without hardware or biological components, signaling a preference for deep-tech over SaaS. The competition follows the successful £4.2M Farming Innovation Programme in 2025, which funded 23 projects and saw 9 proceed to commercial launch within 12 months.
